Senator Hiram L. Fong

First Asian American elected to the U.S. Senate

Senate Tribute Booklet

Prior to his retirement from the U.S. Senate after 17 years of service, fellow Senators took to the Senate floor in Washington, D.C. to praise their colleagues.

The publication of Tributes to The Honorable Hiram L. Fong of Hawaii in the United States Senate Upon the Occasion of his Retirement from the Senate-Sept. 22, 1976 is a compilation of those remarks beginning with his own farewell speech. In this address to his collegues, Senator Fong speaks of his career and lists the many residents of Hawaii he was able to appoint to judgeships, commissions, and other governmental positions. Pages 18 and 19 lists the most notable accomplishments of Sen. Fong’s long service in the highest elected legislative body of the country.
